Four years later, without permission, he laid the first brass plaque to commemorate the deportation and murder of the Sinti and Roma. What started as an informal act of remembering the past has since grown into a transnational project honoring all victims of National Socialism. Today, it is the world’s largest decentralized memorial, with more than 115,000 stumbling stones across 31 countries.
